ReLeaf: Summer 2012

Hello folks, and welcome to ReLeaf, our guide to all things medical marijuana in the Pikes Peak region.

We've done this enough times that most of you know the drill, but in case you're new around here, we run information on all the medical-marijuana centers we know about, and combine that with multiple news and entertainment stories relevant to patients and business owners.

Like, in this issue we take a look at what might happen now that the moratorium on new MMJ centers opening has expired. Will we get some kind of "Costco of weed" making an appearance, driving out the small-business owners? Will consolidation drive the market, as business folk who have been stretched too thin seek an exit? Or will things just, more or less, stay the same? See here for some insight.

And while all that free-market business is playing out, federal intervention remains a concern. A call to the Colorado U.S. Attorney's office only resulted in the news that a third wave of letters is coming, demanding centers located within 1,000 feet of a school close or move; no word on when.

Considering what's going on in California, though, that might be the least of it. On July 10, federal agents set their sights on the largest — and, some say, best-run — MMJ center in the country: Harborside Health Center.

"This latest federal action to seize property flies in the face of promises made by [U.S. Attorney Melinda] Haag to exclusively target dispensaries less than 1,000 feet from a school, and recent statements from U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, who stated that only those dispensaries out of compliance with state law would be subject to Federal enforcement actions," reads a statement from the dispensary. "Harborside Health Center is neither close to a school nor out of compliance with state law."
