Return to Buffalo Creek

Having previously hiked in the Buffalo Creek Recreation Area a few times last year, it seemed like a good idea to go back there and explore more of the trails.  With many to choose from, I set some loose parameters to select which trails to hike: The trails must form a loop, which must be at least 6 miles, and could be of any level of difficulty. After examining the Pocket Pals Buffalo Creek Trails Map, I settled on a loop consisting of the Gashouse Gulch and Baldy Trails.  I chose to do the trail in the counter-clockwise direction by the flip of a coin.  This turned out to be the least difficult direction, as a clockwise direction would've started out with almost 2 miles of steady, but moderate, uphill travel.  The trail is open to all but motorized users. On the weekday that was there, I encountered no other hikers and only a few cyclists, and had no problem sharing the trail.

To get there: Take US 24 west from Colorado Springs to Woodland Park, and turn right (north) on CO Highway 67. Take Hwy 67 28 miles to Deckers, and bear left onto Jefferson County Road 128. Take CR 128 for about 11 miles and turn left onto Forest Service Road 550. Follow FSR 550 for 5.5 miles to a fork with FSR 543 and bear right to stay on FSR 550. After another .5 miles turn right onto FSR 550D and follow it to the trailhead at the end. Once off of CR128, it's all dirt roads, which can be washboardy, but are passable in almost any vehicle.

Be good. Do good things.
