Re: “Letters

Re: Follow your compass

The reform proposed will not give millions of Americans access to basic health care. Everyone in America (citizen or not) already has basic health care guaranteed by EMTALA. This reform merely requires people, and helps some, to buy health insurance. But health insurance is not health care. 75% of medical bankruptcies are from the insured. Please try telling all those people how health insurance is health care. People die when insurance companies deny coverage, so tell the spouse of someone who died because an insurance company denied treatment how insurance counts as health care.

I am against this health reform, but desperately wish my fellow Americans could be guaranteed access to health care. I support an expansion of Medicaid to all who cannot afford insurance, or even socialized care through Medicare for all, but I'm not willing to guarantee every American as a paying customer to the insurance industry that actively lobbies Congress to do things to which I am morally opposed.

I must respectfully disagree with you that this piece of legislation will improve the lives of Americans. It may have short-term benefits in saving someone from dying to a medical illness, but it will have a lasting effect to undermine our government, and it will encourage insurance companies to work even harder against America's interest since they will be guaranteed customers regardless of how cruel they act.

I beg you to think of the future generations which will be left a worse country than we had should this legislation pass, and demand our politicians pass meaningful health care reform (not health insurance reform) that will truly fix our problems and make our health care system the envy of the world.
