RMWFF Shorts Night

When: Sat., April 15, 6:30-10 p.m. 2017
Phone: 226-0450
Price: $35

When patrons of the annual Rocky Mountain Women's Film Festival decided that a year between events was too long to wait, the Rocky Mountain Women's Film Institute decided to create a way to ease the anticipation. Their solution — a one-day festival called A Night of Award-winning Shorts — has been going strong ever since, selling out tickets every year. Acclaimed short films from the Academy Awards, Cannes, Sundance and other renowned festivals are brought to the Stargazers Theater for one evening of cinema in which brevity is the star of the show.

This eighth season's shorts cover a diverse array of topics. I am a Pencil (Je suis un Crayon), winner of the Manhattan Short Film Festival, is an animated film about the response to the Charlie Hebdo attack in France. Academy Award-winner Sing explores a young girl's challenges with bullying in her new choir program — by her teacher. There are some lighthearted choices as well, including Your Mother and I (Best British Short Film, London Short Film Festival), the touching and humorous story of a young girl and her father's tall tales.

Sarah Arnold, who is the marketing coordinator for RMWFI, says that there are many reasons why shorts are so popular. One is the simplicity and affordability of creating such small movies. "It's a great entrance for many filmmakers," says Arnold. "Most of them will make a short film before they make anything else." Another reason for the rise of the short film has a bit more to do with how modern viewers have evolved. "Our attention spans have gotten shorter," Arnold explains. "If you don't capture the audience's attention right away and get the point, you can easily lose them."

Shorts Night will include complimentary popcorn and candy to accompany the mini-film marathon, as well as heavier meals and alcohol for purchase.

6:30-10 p.m. $35. Stargazers, 10 S. Parkside Drive, 226-0450,
