No sympathy for this guy, and I'm usually not someone to side with the police. There are hundreds of examples of police abuse across the country in the last year, but this ain't one of 'em.

You have a neighbor, who is willing to have his first and last name printed, who witnessed the altercation and sides with the cops. You have indications that Schmeiler's Alzheimer's is either non-existent or not-always-present, meaning that he may have been in a clear-headed state when the incident occurred.

Listen -- there is no perfect solution to this problem. It seems very obvious from the story that Albert suffers from some sort of mental illness. Should the police have been notified of this? Yes, in a perfect world. But who should have told them? Do you want police to have medical records when they respond to every situation? Is that not a clear violation of the fourth amendment? And even so, then what? He looks like a big guy and he attacked a police officer. The fact that he suffers from some mental illness doesn't change that.
