Rock Island Trail gap gets funding, and CSPD news

  • Colorado Springs will receive $500,000 from the state-run Colorado the Beautiful Grant Program to fill in the Rock Island Trail's gap with .62 miles of concrete and a gravel shoulder. The project will complete an east-west connection for the Legacy Loop, a trail system the city has envisioned for years.
  • Colorado Springs Deputy Police Chief Vince Niski will serve as interim chief after Chief Pete Carey retires Feb. 1, Mayor John Suthers said Dec. 10. A nationwide search is underway for Carey's replacement.
  • The Colorado Springs Police Department's K9 teams earned Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives National Odor Recognition Testing certification for K9s Britta, Chewie, Oakley and Belka and their handlers.
  • CSPD investigator Derek Graham, a 23-year veteran, received the 2018 Attorney General's Excellence in Law Enforcement Award for Criminal Investigation.
