Rocky Mountain Deli shrugs off Schlotzsky’s

You’ll remember Rocky Mountain Deli's spot as a Schlotzsky’s dating back three decades, but the owners recently ditched corporate-food life to strike out on their own. We respect that and commend their effort to buy more locally, such as area bakery breads. An airy pretzel bun highlights a half hot pastrami and Swiss sandwich, totally textbook and satisfying. And a play on Dutch Crunch Bread called Denver Crunch Bread does its best to contain the overstuffing of fillings of a Mesa Verde sandwich: chicken and bacon layers gooey and spicy with melted pepper jack and green chile, sharp from red and green onions, and squirting guacamole out the sides on each bite. We order each as “Divide” specials for $8.98, where you pair any half sandwich, pizza, wrap, salad or soup. Chicken and dumpling soup arrives with discorporated dumplings, a bowl of mushy starch in need of seasoning. Our Greek feta and veggie pizza slice sports crunchy crust, flatbread style, loaded with toppings, and rates OK.
