Later this summer Sacred Grounds will mark the four-year anniversary since Natasha Shnapper took over, introducing some Russian flavors and an outstanding pastry program. We can never not get the divine medovik, four-layers of honey cake and dulce de leche cream. But we do try a newly added, gluten-free chocolate flourless torte (also $5.50), dark, dense and delightful under raspberry, cinnamon and shaved chocolate garnishes. A Mission Coffee cappuccino ($4.75) plays well, smooth with lingering nuttiness.

But really we’re here for a soft open of new Thursday to Saturday cocktail hours (catch a June 30 launch party), sporting a short spirits and small plate menu until 9 p.m. weekly. Our margarita ($8) and Old Fashioned ($10) rank just serviceable, potent and sweet. The small plates showed a decent start, but could use refining. Sherry-seared mushrooms ($7.39) highlight a simple Brie and cheddar plate with chewy naan triangles and crunchy crackers — best for a wine pairing, while shrimp (also $7.39) with lightly dressed arugula on larger baguette points are mingle-plate snack-y but unremarkable.
