Re: “Medieval duel

Speaking as one of those kids raised at renfests, I find it sad that the way of life I grew up with is being suffocated like this. People like to focus on the surface-y stuff (food, a few stage acts) but I'd bet dollars to doughnuts the experience they take away is enriched most by the community that underlies every big nine plus week festival. Nevermind that, far from a flea market, well run shows are an incredible bastion for american made goods. My mother and most of my neighbors were crafters who work long hours every day making what you see in those shops, and we tend to buy our materials from american wholesalers rather than overseas. I'll never ever forget how angry I got at one man who kept interrogating my mother asking "where did you buy these?"...it was an item she'd skipped a meal to make sure it was done in time for the next day.

Yes some of us have dreadlocks, or are off the beaten path in terms of culture. But we're mostly artists. It's a thing we do. Now that I'm older and have graduated from college and entered the work force as an artist myself (though not at festivals..I cant work that hard for that long. It's intense.) I can honestly say that we're on average less deviant and crazy than the residents of your local college's fine arts department.

If Paradise wants to replace us with locals, or keep letting crappy imports and catering to whatever movie is the flavor of the week, he'll be trading some genuine magic that costs him very little for some paper thin schtick that he's gonna have to compete with Disney and Busch Gardens and everyone else over. At the very least, he'll be bulldozing a piece of my childhood and the livelihood of my friends. So little of us gets in the media that isnt sensationalized or heavily steriotyped, but please please please if you have the time to spare, send an email to the festival ( pjfrank@coloradorenaissance.com )and let the management know you think our culture is at least interesting enough to survive.
