Re: “Road changes ahead for the Old North End

I don't think this article adequately portrays the collaboration taking place among multiple stakeholders in our community. The Old North End Neighborhood (ONEN) is one of the most historic and active neighborhoods in Colorado Springs. As a volunteer neighborhood organization, ONEN has worked diligently to create positive and collaborative relationships with neighboring stakeholders and organizations, dealing with tough issues through compromise and conversation. Such an active and engaged neighborhood should be celebrated.

To illustrate, ONEN has a working group that regularly meets with members of Penrose Hospital to look at, and address, any neighborhood issues as they arise, including parking. The group has worked together to create a plan, which helps both ONEN and Penrose to be better neighbors. There was no directive from ONEN, but rather a problem that was jointly resolved in a neighborly fashion.

Another example is the relationship between our city buses and ONEN. ONEN and MMT (mountain metro) have worked diligently to create solutions to traffic challenges that work for both parties; and, in doing so, we have forged a relationship that is strong and supportive of the entire community.

As ONENs President, I could provide numerous additional examples of relationships we have worked hard to create; however the important thing is to look at how an active neighborhood advocates for itself and it's livability. The Old North End is only doing what every neighborhood should, push for safer streets and a better environment in which to live. Wanting better and safer turning opportunities along Uintah Street or speeds which match adjacent areas and are in keeping with standard residential limits only enhances our community and allows everyone to traverse our streets more safely and with less stress.

ONEN is a hard working and involved neighborhood that serves as a great example for our whole community. I just wish this article had recognized that as well!

Sincerely, Samantha Klingenberg

ONEN President
