Savoy Brown

When: Sat., Aug. 15 2009

One of the drawbacks of the blues-rock genre is that the songwriting is usually pretty lame. But Savoy Brown, over the course of its four decades, has managed to do a surprisingly good job of it. Songs like "Shot in the Head," "Hellbound Train" and "Needle and Spoon" are more than just three chords and my baby leaving me. And while a lot of hellhounds have passed under the bridge since guitarist Kim Simmonds and singer Chris Youlden helmed the U.K. band in its early '70s heyday, Simmons continues to carry on with both the name and legacy. Catch him and the band at Stargazers Theatre (10 S. Parkside Drive, at 8 p.m. for $25 in advance, or $30 at the door. — Bill Forman
