Following an enrollment drop of about 1,000 students last year, Colorado Springs School District 11 must cut $11 million from its general fund budget.

The Gazette reports the district has warned employees about possible layoffs.

District 11 will present preliminary budget recommendations to its Board of Education on March 21, but "we really don't know what they're going to decide on," says district spokesperson Devra Ashby.

However, she adds, because about 85 percent of the district's budget is spent on salaries and benefits, those will probably be affected.

"As in the past, what happens is we look at attrition first and vacant positions and not filling those vacant positions," Ashby says of the budget cuts. "We try to keep as best as possible the cuts away from the classroom, because we know that that impacts students and their education."
