Re: “Should Christians practice yoga?

It is always interesting to me when folks talk about yoga without mentioning the ancient belief system and spiritual underpinnings from which this physical discipline is founded. As if, in 2010, somehow the origins of yoga do not matter. I wonder if this lack of information is because those in dialogue think they are functioning spiritually, but really disconnected from wisdom by substituting intellect. In my faith tradition Solomon was led astray by the pagan faiths he brought into his house, perhaps because of the very drivers propelling his father in his error as well. If, as part of the family of God through Jesus Christ, we experience a living relationship with the Holy Ghost, then opening up any (para-neural?) lines of communication between our physical being and the spiritual realities will do no harm. The core question requiring an answer to protect ourselves should not be “should Christians practice yoga”, but “am I truly alive in Christ”, living inside the blessings of the sermon on the Mount. If this evidence of our new heart is true, our intellect easily recognizes actions and behaviors common to man, and amazement each time our actions and behaviors are common characteristics of God. Conversely, the principles of nutrition, exercise, stress management and what the Victorians mistakenly identified as clean living fail (or find corroboration) in light of God's principals, e.g.-
Matthew 15:16-20 (New Living Translation) “Don’t you understand yet?” Jesus asked. 17 “Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer. 18 But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you. 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. 20 These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.”
