Re: “Nashville statement sparks Christian controversy

Mallory: as a "recovering" evangelical and now, I guess, progressive Christian, I want to applaud your treatment of the recent sensitive events surrounding the Nashville statement. Key to truly understanding any issue, I believe, is the grasp of the core issue that divides the two (or sometimes multiple) sides.

You have done this eloquently and succinctly in your sentence, "At the heart of the controversy is the age-old tension between orthodoxy and what progressive Christians call prophetic voice. Is the Bible an inerrant document with a static interpretation or is it a rich text, valuable for reflection but unable to provide one-size-fits-all answers? Is the church forsaking its roots or adapting?" From this, you present a nuanced understanding of the good (if misdirected) intentions of that portion of the evangelical world.

I believe that the world would be a different place, and our differences much less destructive, if we each had the ability you have demonstrated to grasp, articulate, and respect the various core-values that are in tension with one another rather than vilify others based on false negative assumptions as to their motives.

Thank you for this well-written piece and for your heart behind it.
