As the former frontwoman of the California band René Descartes, Connie Sgarbossa may or may not be a Cartesian fundamentalist, but she is definitely not a screamo artist. We know this because her current band, SeeYouSpaceCowboy, released a single last year entitled “Stop Calling Us Screamo.” Rather than leave hapless music critics and hardcore taxonomists to battle over whether the band’s music is metalcore or punk, SeeYouSpaceCowboy have now taken to calling themselves sasscore, which is as good a genre description as any for blistering sonic assaults like “Albert Camus Is My Life Coach” and “I Am a Trans-Continental Railroad, Please Run a Train on Me.” Sgarbossa, who identified as non-binary before going on hormones and coming out as a woman, specializes in obliquely politicized lyrics and throat-shredding vocals that are aggressively antagonistic without being annoying. The band can also celebrate their newly announced signing to Pure Noise Records — whose roster includes Less Than Jake, Senses Fail and numerous other Warped Tour veterans — which may keep their sasscore flag flying for years to come.
