Frustrated by U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's refusal to create a bipartisan committee on climate change, Sen. Michael Bennet and 10 other Democrats set up the Senate Special Committee on the Climate Crisis on March 27.

"For many reasons — most of all, the corruption of money in our politics — Republicans in Washington refuse to treat climate change as a serious issue," Bennet said in a release. "Our children's future can't become another casualty of Washington's mindless partisanship."

The panel is expected to investigate, hold hearings and issue findings on the economic and national security consequences of climate change.

Other Senate Democrats on the panel: Brian Schatz of Hawaii, Chuck Schumer of New York, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, Jeff Merkley of Oregon, Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, Ed Markey of Massachusetts, Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, Catherine Cortez-Masto of Nevada and Tina Smith of Minnesota.
