Seven Days

18 Thursday

It's just a jump to the left, and then a step to the rii-eye-yiii-yight... It's Time Warp time again, baby, as the Colorado College Drama and Dance Department presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show in Armstrong Theater, at the northwest corner of Cascade and Cache La Poudre. I'll bet you're all quivering in antici....... pation. Tickets are $2 to $5, and by all means, bring your bread, rice, lighters, newspapers, squirt guns and selves in drag or it just wouldn't be Rocky Horror, would it? The show runs tonight through Saturday at 8 p.m. and twice on Halloween night. Call 389-6607.

But wait, there's more -- also screening at Colorado College tonight and Friday is Mind the Addiction, Teton Gravity Research's 2001 extreme ski and snowboard film. Aprs film, rock out to Friendly Neighbor in Gates Common Room. Six or seven bucks will get you free beer and soda, too. Call 389-6607.

Paul Rudnick's Jeffery rounds out the sixth annual Gay and Lesbian Film Festival at Smokebrush this weekend. Upstart Performing Ensemble presents the play at 8 p.m. tonight and tomorrow, and at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $12. Call 262-3232 for details.

19 Friday

Get your gooey, romantic opera fix in Pueblo tonight as the Western Opera Theatre performs Cosi Fan Tutte (Tale of Love) in Memorial Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 to $20. Call 719/542-1211 for details and directions.

It's normally an OK decision to turn and run as soon as you hear someone proclaim themselves rockin' anything; it usually confirms that they do not rock, not one little bit. Not the case with Rockin' Jake, though. Despite the goofy name, he actually is very capable of "rockin" the harp (harmonica, for those nonrockers). The white boy got soul, and you need to gitcha some. Jake plays Tres Hombres in Woodland Park tonight. Call 687-0625.

20 Saturday

Gerry O'Beirne has a warbling, unsettled tenor perfect for keening, and Andy M. Stewart really gets off on making the poems of Robert Burns auditory via voice and guitar. Without a pint of Harp and some little people, it's probably not possible to get more Celtic. The two performers appear tonight in Black Rose Acoustic Society's little house in the big woods at Shoup and Black Forest roads. Bring $10 if you're a member, $15 if not. Call 573-7439.

Ballet Hispanico sashays its way to the Pikes Peak Center for one show tonight at 8. See below for more.

21 Sunday

Rejoice, refined readers. Your dark, cold, chamber music--less summer is over, and once again the warm glow of orchestral music will kiss your face. The Chamber Orchestra of the Springs opens its 20th season with works by Strauss and Beethoven and a world premiere by local composer Mark Arnest. The concert begins at 2:30 p.m. in the hallowed space of First Christian Church. Call 633-3649 to find out more.

22 Monday

Oh, to be both a poet and a critic. One must either be one's own toughest editor, or be completely oblivious to one's own work (every word a shining diamond, every letter a glowing pearl). Anne Stevenson carries the combination off, adding to it the distinction of biographer. The authoress will be discussing her book Bitter Fame: The Life of Sylvia Plath along with her own poetic works at 8 p.m. in CC's Bemis Dining Hall, 920 N. Cascade. It might be interesting to see how critical she is of her own writing. She may debate with herself, perhaps even breaking into the Three Faces of Anne. Popcorn not provided. Call 389-6607.

23 Tuesday

Tuesday has been cancelled. Refunds at point of purchase.

24 Wednesday

No props, no animals, no costumes. No interpretations, no epics, no music. Just you, your poem, the mike and a room full of people staring at you. There may be crickets chirping somewhere in back. So goes the UCCS Literary Arts Society Poetry Slam at Utopia Cafe downtown tonight. There will be no distractions, only the power of the poetry to awe and astound. Costs a buck, and those unafraid of public slamming can sign up at the door. The intensely poetic evening begins at 8 p.m.
