The Rocky Mt. Natural Store and Colorado Springs Organic Produce Co-op have recently moved from 1502 W. Colorado Ave. to a new location at 2117 W. Colorado Ave. Co-owner Randy Barnes says the move was made in order to cut overhead. The business, now in its 11th year, continues to offer local produce and all-natural and organic meats, as well as vitamins, herbs, natural body products and classes. Current store hours are: 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Call 329-0180 or visit rmnstore.com for more information.

Almost famous
Congratulations to Victor Matthews of the Black Bear Restaurant and Lawrence Johnson of the Warehouse Restaurant and Gallery (formerly of the Briarhurst Manor Estate) for being featured in the new book Eat This: 1,001 Things to Eat Before You Diet, by New York Times bestselling author Ian Jackman. Nearly two pages are devoted to Johnson in a section on meats and local produce, and Matthews appears in a Q&A promoting uniquely "Rockies or Colorado" foods, such as lamb, San Luis Valley potatoes, buffalo, cheese and Biodome-raised fish. Whether it be from rumored troubles with corporate, the launching of a soup place in perhaps the wrong season or simply prices that many people felt were too high, the Original SoupMan (10 S. Tejon St.) has closed its doors, a mere 2 months after opening. Also out of business in recent days, for unknown reasons, is the Eighth Street caf and market, Samba Brasil, which was open for just more than a year.

Know your flora
Local author, botanist and wild food enthusiast Chris Frederick will lead an herb walk to identify edible and medicinal plants native to the Front Range from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 28. His tour departs from the Bear Creek Nature Center's parking lot (245 Bear Creek Road). The cost, along with a canned good donation, will be $3 for members and $10 for non-members.
