Beyond bar food
Flamethrowers Nuevo Mex Grill at Benny's (517 W. Colorado Ave.) opened shop in late October, bringing serious Southwestern eats into the longstanding watering hole.

Proprietors Patrick and Dorothy Bach are currently serving from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, except Sundays, with late hours (until midnight) on Fridays and Saturdays.

"Everything is made from scratch, hand-cut," says Patrick, who in addition to a regular menu runs three to four daily board specials. Those might include chile rellenos, steaks, stacked enchiladas, smothered burritos, chili burgers and vegetarian items all with ample red or green chiles.

Formerly executive chef of a restaurant by the same name in Las Vegas, Patrick says he roasts about 10 chile varieties, and he uses family recipes from Chimayo, N.M., where his ancestry is fifth-generation.

"It's authentic New Mexican," he says. "People from Colorado and New Mexico will know the difference."

Two dogs are better than one
A new neighborhood tavern is still in its puppy phase: 2 Dog Tavern (3113 S. Academy Blvd.) opened on Sept. 15. As far as we know, there are no teething marks on the bar, and cat people are welcome.

According to Teresa Allen, daughter of owners Dan and Bonny Allen, 2 Dog serves "very, very cold tapped beer," light snacks and sandwiches. They also offer happy hours and drink specials and have both NFL and college sports packages on a handful of TVs.

Viva variety!
Cubanacan Restaurant (208 N. Union Blvd.) has announced a new lunch special that runs between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Choose a lunch portion of your favorite entre with two sides, rather than just a single daily special choice (the old program). Prices from $6.99 to $9.99 for steak and pork sandwiches, mahi mahi, oxtail and beef stew and grilled chicken, among other items. Call 302-4516 for more.

Stare at my innie
Caspian Caf (4375 Sinton Road) continues to offer belly dancing during dinner service, Thursday through Saturday, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Nothin' helps moussaka or shish taouk go down easier than spectating some hip swivelin' and ab rollin'. Call 528-1155 for more.
