Victory! (garden)

Maybe they were planning to already. Or maybe they were responding to the 100,000-plus people said to have petitioned them. But the Obamas announced last week that they will plant a 1,100-square-foot organic vegetable garden on the White House's south lawn.

Let me be the first to say, "Rock on, crouton!" (A favorite expression of a spirited chef for whom I used to work.) Many on the sustainability front are excited for what they view as an endorsement for healthy, locally grown food.

Thai 'food'

Authentic Thai food has reached Powers Boulevard. So says Arharn Thai (3739 Bloomington St.) owner Doungsamorn "Pong" Peanvanvanich.

"I want people to know how Thai food should taste," says the Bangkok native, who adds that the word arharn simply means "food."

The 35-seat operation opened earlier this month and serves curry standards, homemade coconut ice cream and unique specialties like pad Thai ho kai, which Pong describes as a "Pad Thai burrito" that's very popular in Thailand. Call 596-6559 for more.

Outside the Basket

The Picnic Basket catering outfit has begun grilling from roughly 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays in its parking lot at 1701 S. Eighth St. Purchase 3 pounds of beef tri-tip to take home ($22; feeds four to six), or eat beer-basted chicken ($5.99), spicy Portuguese linguica sausages ($3.50 each) and weekly specialty sandwiches (like barbecued brisket) on site. Go Hungry's

A to-go menu recently came to our office from a place new to me, though it's been open a year: Hungry's at 112 N. Nevada Ave. Formerly the Avenue Caf and Grill next to the Underground, Hungry's focuses on downtown delivery and pick-up, with nothing on the menu exceeding $7. Many items are made daily in-house, including fresh green chili and cheese biscuits ($2.50). Call 227-0810 for more.
