Broadway bound

It's been roughly 10 years since Broadway Deli opened at 7170 N. Academy Blvd., and about six years since it split off from what's become East Coast Deli at 24 S. Tejon St. Last month, Broadway owner Eric Velasquez decided to be done with the loneliest number by adding a second location in the former Antonio's-briefly-turned-Marzio's at 4475 Northpark Drive (203-3100).

Velasquez says the market was in his favor and that he's hired 22 new employees to fill the large space's demands. Look for the same breakfast and lunch menu as the first location but a "greatly expanded" dinner menu with pizzas, steaks, pastas, seafood and more.

Taste of tequila

Speaking of turnovers: In the former Charlie's Pit Bar-B-Que-briefly-turned-BJ's Brick House BBQ at 2819 N. Nevada Ave., the Topete family opened Blue Agave Mexican Grill (447-9999) last week. Manager Edwin Topete says the outfit, which the family spent three months remodeling, serves a mixture of traditional and family recipes, some hailing back to Guadalajara.

Edwin's father owns two construction-related businesses that did the makeover, and his mother does most of the cooking. Look for everything from tacos, burritos and enchiladas to flautas, tamales and quesadillas. One thing that Edwin says sets Blue Agave apart: gourmet cream-based sauces, such as a hot poblano sauce used in place of more generic red salsas. Also look for breakfast burritos from 7 to 10 a.m. and specialty items like a guava cheesecake.

As for the name: Tequila comes from the agave plant, and the outfit hopes to have a liquor license to sell some by summer.

Central Thai

Downtown has lacked a Thai eatery since Little Bangkok folded several years ago, but that's now changed with the recent opening of Pho-N-Thai at 125 N. Spruce St. (329-0705).

The outfit — co-owned by Cambodia natives Chnay and Soyin Duk and Springs couple Jeff and Nicole Natividad — serves primarily Thai staples and Vietnamese items like noodle bowls, but also dishes international plates such as schnitzel and gyros and American favorites such as Philly cheese steaks, hotdogs and chicken wings. "There's something for everyone," says Nicole.

The Duks do the cooking — Chnay brings 20 years experience, and Soyin used to own Margo's Vienna Station on Astrozon Boulevard. (Her sister runs Thai Lily off Platte Avenue.) Jeff still serves at Fujiyama and bartends at SODO.

Look for specials such as $1.99 pho during a grand opening celebration, Jan. 14-16.

Down and out

Dos Hombres, open since 1986 at 3071 S. Academy Blvd., has closed.
