Sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, is on the rise locally, according to El Paso County Public Health. There were seven reported deaths in the county last year, compared to three in 2016 and five in 2015. In 2016, the most recent year for which data was available, 47 babies died of SIDS in Colorado, according to the state Child Fatality Prevention System. The American Academy of Pediatrics says that to prevent the risk of SIDS, parents should make sure their babies sleep alone, on their backs, and in a crib without toys or loose bedding.
