Jeremy Cochran, guitarist for Smoke or Fire

Indy: I managed to recently catch you guys open for Against Me! in Denver. Is it always that much of a madhouse at your shows, or is that Against Me!'s fault?

JC: It's AG's fault! The size of those shows is definitely their doing, as well as the madness, and the energy. Our audiences are energetic and there's pits and stuff, but the sheer size is so different.

Indy: You had to change your name from Jericho, because some whiny Australians had the same name. How'd you settle on Smoke or Fire?

JC: We tried to change it a bunch of times, and we'd send the ideas to Fat [Wreck Chords], to check and see if there's any other bands with those names. The record was ready to be released, the artwork was done, so they were just waiting for a name. In New Jersey we were on tour, up late, drinking and playing cards, and "Smoke or Fire" is actually a card game.

Indy: You started as college buddies, back in 1998. How'd you get from your goofing-around situation to where you are now?

JC: We were all in college when we first started. After college, we realized, 'If this something we want to do full-time, we need to decide now.' We moved to Virginia, and it renewed all the passion and influence to keep going. It's been in stages -- we haven't been constantly trudging.
