Indy: Your new CD, The Bedlam in Goliath, shows a bit poppier sound and leans more toward shorter songs. What brought out more of that influence?

CBZ: We wanted to try new things like that. For me, at home and in the car, I listen to Badfinger and I listen to Slade. I have a really bad itch for, like, power pop and a lot of '70s power pop. I think sometimes it came out [on The Bedlam in Goliath].

Indy: There's a pretty wild story behind the making of The Bedlam in Goliath involving a Ouija-style "talking board" called the Soothsayer. You guys started playing it and strange things happened. A sound engineer had a nervous breakdown, tracks disappeared from hard drives and the studio flooded, to name a few. When did you first start to think the CD was cursed?

CBZ: The biggest thing that, to me, was the indication was the nervous breakdown of our engineer. He had his sanity for a long time ... but he lost it really badly, and he hijacked the tapes.

Indy: I know you eventually got back the tapes, but a lot of the music had to be re-created. Eventually, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, your partner in crime in the band, buried the Soothsayer. Has anything weird happened since?

CBZ: No, and I've tried to be good to stay away from it. I do have the part of me ... [that] would love to unbury it and play it again. ... So it's good that I don't know where it's at.
