Skirted Heifer’s northern expansion shows same goodness

This highly successful downtown burger spot expanded north earlier this year in the hands of Kevin Megyeri, son of Kevin Sr. and Suzette Megyeri, who own the original burger location. Kevin told us last fall that he’d taken feedback on how downtown was “too small” to keep up with demand, so out of the gate he doubled the size here. Still, we’re lucky to nab a table one Saturday night, as we share a burger of the week and one of the newly added ice cream sandwiches.

The Red, White and Blue arrives with an overly charred patty of grass-fed beef that’s been pressed so hard it skirts out at its edges like the eatery’s melted cheddar cheese overflow on the signature Classic Skirted Heifer burger, which leaves it a little drier and crumbly. Otherwise, we always love the house garlic focaccia bun, and a combo of ranch dressing, blue cheese and Frank’s RedHot-evoking wing sauce makes for a nice, tangy, funky and vinegar-biting (in that order) flavor medley, with regular fixings.

Our Big Bessie caramel-pecan cookie sandwich hosts pecan pralines ‘n cream Blue Bell ice cream (we’re told, though a menu says “local” ice cream) that’s rolled in crushed Heath bar crumbles for a nice tertiary taste. The cookie itself has both a nice sturdiness and chewiness and a pleasant undertone of raw cookie dough flavor, while the good cold stuff finishes with strong nuttiness.
