L.A.’s 20-year-old Austin W. Anderson (FKA Austin Feinstein) has worked with hip-hop’s enfant terrible Tyler, The Creator, a fact that might lead you to expect a very different sound from that of Slow Hollows. The solo project that’s now gone full-on band — thanks to the inclusion of bassist Aaron Jassenoff, drummer Jackson Katz and trumpeter Daniel Fox — has just released “Lessons for Later,” a new single that, together with a video directed by hip-hop artist Kevin Abstract, is all forlorn and impressionistic. The frontman’s hushed vocals and minimalist guitar playing are accompanied by muted jazz instrumentation, moody synthesizers and vintage trip-hop production (including the obligatory vinyl surface noise), all with a melancholy beauty that suggests the more reflective side of Factory Records acts like Joy Division and The Durutti Column. In other words, it’s about as far from Tyler’s Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All collective as you can get. Plus, Anderson’s post-punk poster-child looks have gotten him modeling work for Yves Saint Laurent, all of which means Slow Hollows will probably have gone viral by the time you finish reading this sentence.
