Smørbrød serves splendid sandwiches

We checked out a few bites and desserts at Jay Gust's new Lincoln Center digs, Smørbrød, now open.

Smørbrød's bar features Nordic spirits, cocktails, beers from neighboring Goat Patch Brewing Company, and, a standout for the city, a selection of predominantly Austrian and German wines.

The space is lit with track lighting and breezy, thanks in part to big windows and a garage door opening on the patio.

Smørbrød takes up the spaces previously intended for Tailgate BBQ and Mountain Valley Market, though its kitchen is small, in part to maximize seating.

Every smørbrød, like the vegetarian Vik, comes on Nightingale Bread-baked rugbrød (Danish-style rye bread) with butter.

The Lillehammer, named for a city in southern Norway, features roast beef, Jarlsberg cheese, horseradish and beet remoulade.

Named for the Icelandic capital, the Helsinki features crab salad, avocado, onion and spinach.

The Vänern, named for the largest lake in Sweden, bears pickled herring, lemon aioli, radishes and dill.

The Kladdkaka, a Swedish gooey chocolate cake with whipped cream and hazelnuts, hits that perfect spot between chocolate cake and brownie batter, a supremely indulgent dish.

The restaurant also offers custom-made gelato, churned at local Blue Mountain Creamery — we sample lingonberry, which gets a little sour cream churned in.

Look for all manner of little house-made accents to show up, like mustard seeds pickled with star anise and other spices.
