A few years ago, former Stompdown Killaz collective emcee Snak The Ripper grabbed more than his share of headlines thanks to a feud with fellow Vancouver suburbanite Madchild, resulting in a series of diss tracks and a Noisey article titled “A Rap Beef Is Threatening to Tear Apart Western Canada.” Setting aside for the moment how much any of us care about Western Canada being torn apart, it’s worth noting that Snak’s newly released Off the Rails album finds the 35-year-old William Scott Fyvie displaying a degree of late-blooming maturity on tracks like the closing “Lesson Learned.” “You gotta think before you speak, be selective with your words,” Snak raps. “It’s easier to learn if you just listen and observe; you can see the bigger picture if your vision isn’t blurred.” Compared to 2015 lyrics like “This faggot Madchild, thought it was smart to start dissin’ me, you just stepped in a puddle, I’m a spark of electricity,” it’s progress.
