Re: “Gazette's un-funny editorialist

I don't know Wayne Laugesen and only sporadically read his work in The Gazette, but I know enough about the author of this column, and about how propaganda is written, to strongly suspect it's a hit piece. Did Tosches even have the decency to call Laugesen up and get his side of the story? Evidently not, since Laugesen doesn't even get the courtesy of a denial or a "no comment." I know this is just an alternative weekly, but can't readers expect a little more professionalism? Tosches has been nursing a grudge against the real newspaper in town since the G showed him the door, and he'll sieze on any opportunity to settle the score. This seems par for the course. But there's a troubling difference here, which marks a new low. It's one thing to lampoon the G's libertarian editorial philosophy (though it's no more predictable that the liberal slant served up in the pages of this publication); it's quite another thing to accuse someone of being an anti-Semite, which equates to calling him a racist. That's a very serious, arguably libelous charge to level -- a charge that can destroy a person's career and reputation -- based on the flimsy evidence offered here. If I were Laugesen I would sue. Of course, if you're the target of such a smear, sometimes the last thing you want to do is fight back, since that just prolongs the discomfort and further spreads the disinformation, so I'm guessing the target of this attack piece will refrain. But that doesn't mean Indy readers should tolerate it, even if they strongly disagree with the G's editorial voice. I for one am cancelling my subscription! Oh, that's right, this "newspaper" is given away free. I guess it's true what they say -- you get what you pay for. Shame on the Indy for publishing smears.
