Opened in 2009, South Jersey Subs changed hands in October of 2016 when then-owner John Kondratow sold the business to Michael Lopez, a former New Jersey resident. The spot’s still serving up classic East Coast Italian sandwiches, hot and cold alike. Sausage is the word of the day when we drop by for an Italian sausage sub ($8.79/8-inch), which we top with the traditional accoutrements: provolone, mushrooms, peppers and onion, skipping red sauce altogether on the advice of an employee.

Those veggies spend time on the flattop with Italian sausage, making for a delicious melding of flavors. The fatty meat provides plenty of moisture, and the roll it’s served on has a chewy crust around a tender interior. We’d probably try it with sauce next time — it could use a hit of acidity, but it’s a generally pleasing sandwich. We pair it with a bottle of raspberry soda ($1.75/10-ounce) from Original New York Seltzer, a perfectly serviceable raspberry soda, sans coloring.
