The Colorado Springs Fire Department is celebrating the reopening of Fire Station 1, at 29 S. Weber St., after a major construction project added space for its ladder truck and an engine, as well as other equipment, such as hoses, hand tools and air packs and reserve apparatus. The project also included bringing the 92-year-old building up to code, including new wiring, plumbing, heating, air conditioning and lighting. The addition means firefighters can drive apparatus into the new storage bays, rather than tie up traffic on Weber Street to back into the old building's tight quarters.

The project began in summer 2016, and its approximate cost of $2.2 million was funded through the voter-approved Public Safety Sales Tax. The station, one of the busiest in the city, remained open during construction.
