Re: “Bach exalts cadets with Spirit award

Thanks for organizing those efforts. Pam, thanks for noticing and publishing this. It warms my heart to see communities coming together in need.

Re: “UPDATE (No. 2): Academy dean of faculty to retire

@Inside the USAFA.

Thanks for the post. We have heard great things about the Academy Scholar's Program. About 1/2 of those students (2% of the class) are selected to go off to sponsored schools such as MIT, Harvard, and other fine institutions of higher learning. With hard work and an intense drive to succeed, my DS should be able to achieve his goal.

My son is positively delighted at the USAFA including the staff (including the food). The way he is talking right now, he wants to make a career out of the USAFA. Flying (pardon the pun) isn't on his radar. He is intensely proud of his school and is honored to wear his uniform in public (which he has to at all times as a 4th degree).

Tejon. I need to make a public apology to "Inside the USAFA" because (as he mentioned earlier) you are a troll. It seems you are bored on your Sunday and want to engage in a debate to make your life complete. Why else would someone post so often?

Re: “UPDATE (No. 2): Academy dean of faculty to retire

Wow I'm making a "fool of myself"? How so? Because we disagree and now you are taking it personally? As I said, we did our due diligence and it's not a problem in 2012. Maybe it was x years ago. I don't know and I will give you the benefit of the doubt.

He will be in the Scholars program 2nd semester. An insider like you would know that you cannot be in the Scholars program (1st semester) as a 4th degree.

Forgive me if I took it personal for referencing my adult son as a "kid". These forums are full of people not giving the respect that most cadets deserve. I understand several cadets don't deserve respect.

May I ask, what do you do at the Academy? No need to get defensive. I'm not trying to pin you down or discredit you.

Re: “UPDATE (No. 2): Academy dean of faculty to retire

@inside USAFA. Why do you feel the need to call people names? Why are you so defensive?

Rest assured I am a father of a 4th degree (freshman). My son got a LOA at the USMA (West Point) but no LOA at the USAFA (he is not an IC). We flew out to USAFA as a family to take a look for ourselves in October of 2011 where he had conversations with some cadets about the topic. To help him make a decision which academy to chose, my wife and I attended parent group meetings 9 months before BCT (we already knew several USMA parents).

During the AFA parents meetings is where my wife and I got the names of many AFA students. My DS reached out and talked with many students about all aspects of Academy life.

To clarify, my "kid" as you say is actually a young man mature beyond his years. If it matters, he was selected in the scholars program (top 4%). While my DS didn't "even go through recognition yet", he doesn't feel it is as "highly restrictive" as you paint it out to be. He is very confident in his beliefs and would welcome a mature debate.

This topic is blown out of proportion and people really just need to move on. FOr their own mental sake.

Re: “UPDATE (No. 2): Academy dean of faculty to retire

@Heather. Give our family a little credit in my ability to decipher the "state-of-the-state" at the AFA as it relates to the pressures (or lack there of) to discuss ones religious views. Before he decided to attend, we talked with parents groups and later a dozen current cadets. My son was deeply concerned about how he would be treated because of all of the controversial press. He is a freshman. Putting it bluntly there simple isn't a problem in 2012 in the eyes of the cadets.

Now that he is at the Academy he has drilling into it deeper and sees absolutely no evidence of any problems. Not with his teacher now with the diverse student body. He loves to discuss all topics related to religion with fellow classmates. I'd characterize him as liberal leaning.

As I said, it's not a problem. Maybe it was in the past but not in 2012.
