"I don’t think any of us are still in our angry punk phases,” Summer Cannibals bandleader Jessica Boudreaux recently told an interviewer. That claim isn’t entirely supported by the Portland band’s new album Can’t Tell Me No, particularly on its opening track “False Anthem,” which offers lyrics like “Look ahead and see your future’s gone / Here it is right in my motherfucking palm.“It’s not entirely clear who Boudreaux is addressing here, but it likely has something to do with the band recording an entire album that, for unexplained reasons, had to be scrapped.

Yet even with the title track’s “I am not your bitch” refrain, Can’t Tell Me No is musically less aggressive than 2016’s Full of It, which earned comparison to Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney and other acts from the ‘90s riot grrrl movement. How the band’s poppier punk sound will translate to the stage remains to be seen.
