Sunny Sweeney at the Black Sheep show preview

No, the title track of Sunny Sweeney’s most recent album Trophy has nothing to do with her Academy of Country Music nomination for Best New Female Vocalist.

It’s actually about being called a trophy wife by her husband’s ex: “Put him on a pedestal, is something you would never do / Yeah, he’s got a trophy now, for putting up with you.” Ouch. Still, “Trophy” is a helluva lot sunnier — with its pop-country vocal and slinky baritone guitar — than “Bottle by My Bed,” a painfully honest song that draws upon her experiences with infertility and miscarriage: “It’s an empty room at the top of the stairs / Watching the evening news with a couple of beers / I only call my husband baby ‘cause I love the word / Never wanted something so bad that it hurts.”

The song is one of four that the Houston native co-wrote with Lori McKenna, whom Sweeney has referred to as her “spirit animal.” McKenna, by the way, has two Grammy trophies on her mantel. Odds are it’s just a matter of time before Sweeney goes home with one of her own.
