Re: “From freedom to failure

From a father whose son is just about to be released into civilian life I will say this story is not encouraging. It angers me that ex-offenders like my son, who have done their time, paid their dues, now face another sentence.....the second judge and jury of the public mind. It is clearly and simply another case of discrimination against a group of persons who have made bad choices, have mental health issues, have been caught up in drug activity and abuse and who have paid the price,(however long the sentence) per the states rules, and who are now unfairly shut out, shut down and set up for failure. Capitalism breeds poverty, despair, desperation and barbarism ultimately as it skims off the wealth (capital) created by the working classes that would otherwise remain in their hands. Then uses this ill gotten gain in other adventures and speculation that steer this wealth to the upper echelons of society. There is no question of what the causation's of crime are; poverty, hopelessness, and desperation. In my sons case overall poverty is the culprit. Yet the banking criminals who just pulled off the largest theft of public monies in world history, walk away without a scratch, leaving us, the working class to pay not only in increased taxes and fees but in the losses of jobs, cutting of wages, loss in real estate value, lost retirement and savings, loss of services and nowhere to turn but against each other. Is it any wonder that the U.S. has the highest incarceration rate of any developed nation in the world? It is a country that has spent its time over that last 50 years, rejecting and neglecting the needs of society in terms of wages, health care, genuine democracy and equality. Now the chickens....as they say......are coming home to roost. And it's only going to get worse.....
