The Bistro on 2nd is a quaint fine dining spot in Monument

The Bistro On 2nd owner Rick Velliquette boasts 20 years’ restaurant experience, including time at Pepper Tree and Joseph’s Fine Dining. He opened last year in the former Wisdom Tea House, a cozy, historic two-story house. It stocks a smart booze list with quality wines, but I’m drawn to mule drinks featuring nearby 3 Hundred Days of Shine. The Holiday Mule ($10) incorporates a seasonal pumpkin spice moonshine with the fresh lime and ginger beer, working great on account of the balanced baking spices playing off the ginger bite. A plate of liver and onions ($14/lunch) poses more of a challenge, pungent to the point where I wonder if the calf liver soaked in milk long enough. Sautéed onions and bacon can’t mitigate the organ taste — don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind some of that funk — and it takes focus to get through it. Side mashed potatoes show great texture but lack seasoning, as does dry-ish cole slaw, not the veggie side du jour I’d think to pair here.
