  • The city and mayor’s social account handles have changed in the interest of brand alignment. City of Colorado Springs government is now @CityofCOS on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, while Mayor John Suthers can be reached at @MayorofCOS on Facebook and Twitter.
  • Children’s Hospital Colorado will open a Colorado Springs location next spring with the help of $1 million from the John and Margot Lane Foundation.
  • About 100 veterans experiencing homelessness in Colorado will get a permanent place to live, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced — thanks to $782,000 in funding awarded to the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Program.
  • Fort Carson plans to conduct prescribed burns in various training areas between Oct. 5 and Dec. 31. The burns allow for military training within certain range areas by reducing the possibility of wildfires.
  • On Oct. 30, the first-ever Colorado Free Application Day, prospective students can apply for free to any of Colorado’s 32 public colleges and universities, and several private institutions.
  • Year-to-date passenger enplanements (the number of people boarding planes) at the Colorado Springs Airport for the month of August were up 19 percent from August of last year. Total year-to-date passenger traffic increased 12 percent over the same period.

  • Colorado Springs Utilities’ new CEO, Aram Benyamin, was sworn in to his new position Oct. 2 over the objections of Utilities Board member Andy Pico, who protested Benyamin’s $480,000 annual salary — more than $30,000 above that of his predecessor, Jerry Forte.
