Street Smarts

As the days fall away, we remember the immortal words of humorist Dave Barry: "Once again, we come to the Holiday Season, a deeply religious time that each of us observes, in his own way, by going to the mall of his choice."

Describe a memorable holiday shopping experience. When everything was 20 to 60 percent off.

What's your go-to gift in last-second emergencies? Chocolate or perfume.

Who's the most interesting gift-giver you know? Myself. I love finding unique gifts in places like the Isle of Lewis in Scotland, or on the road going through Why, Arizona.

How into the holidays are you this year? We weren't into it at all the past two years, so we're trying harder this year. We're having a season of spiritual healing, believing there can be a tomorrow.

Are you more a Black Friday or a last-minute holiday shopper? Neither. I shop a little at a time throughout [the season].

What's your go-to emergency gift? Almost everyone likes a book on some topic.

Are gift cards wise or lazy? They're lazy. It's like giving cash.

How into the holidays are you this year? I'm not that into the buying-of-stuff part, but I love celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, our savior.

What's your go-to, emergency-purchase gift? For a girl, it's probably a candle. For a guy, it's money.

Are gift cards savvy or lazy? I'm picky about what I get, so I love gift cards.

Describe an unusual gift you've received. A Jesus action figure.

How into the holidays are you this year? It's my favorite time of year. I love the lights and everyone's in a good mood. It's a beautiful time for reflection, too.
