The Hungry Pirate slings American style tacos sans the high seas shenanigans

Open since August 2017, The Hungry Pirate took winter off but has returned for the warm months, opting to participate in the Pioneers Museum’s Food Truck Tuesdays through October’s end. That’s where we find them, dishing a very focused (read: small) menu with four taco and two side options — that’s it. And the taco constructions are equally simple, less of the prevailing Mexico street taco style and more gringo beach town American style. It’s easy; it plays fine if unambitious.

My two fried shrimp tacos ($7) arrive in thick flour tortillas with ample fresh crunch thanks to a dominating slaw and plenty of crispy popcorn shrimp pieces. Cilantro and a “zesty sauce,” basically a Sriracha sour cream, provide a little zing. A side of grilled pineapple ($3) becomes dessert with a coating of brown sugar caramelizing two rectangular skewers of the already naturally sweet fruit on the grill; what a candy treat. Side note: We appreciate that none of the staff are dressed as pirates.
