Lisa McCall, of The Lethal Lisa McCall Band, doesn't like to strum her guitar. That's a little boring, and a bit too far from her roots.

"I was definitely taught to play with a Memphis feel," she says. "It's a bit more aggressive."

McCall describes the sound of her hometown, or the "Memphis feel," as attacking the listener with licks that come from the heart, not the songbook.

"You try to feel what you're playing, instead of going through the motions," she says. "You just feel it."

Her band has been together for 15 years, and McCall credits much of its longevity to the aid it's received from other bands. Blues bands take care of each other, McCall says.

"We've had a lot of good people help us," McCall says. "And we hope to pass it along and pay it forward."

McCall, who finished relocating to Colorado Springs only about six months ago, hopes to find the same sort of camaraderie among performers here. But no matter whether the band is playing with a strong support system or alone, it'll still get its energy from the blues.

"When I'm on stage," McCall says, "I'm getting my daily workout."
