In just the past year, The New Respects have performed twice at Red Rocks, and now comes the opportunity to see them play an opening set at The Black Sheep. Need we say more? Only that the Nashville band of early-20-something siblings (plus one cousin) released their debut album Before the Sun Goes Down just two months ago. A collection of slick funk-pop originals, it goes a long way toward fulfilling the promise of last year’s inclusion among Rolling Stone’s “10 New Artists You Need to Know,” in which the venerable publication likened them to Lenny Kravitz, Alabama Shakes and Elle King. Like their hero Aretha Franklin, the four bandmates hail from a gospel lineage, but have since crossed over into the secular realm. Other New Respects heroes include Stevie Wonder and Jimi Hendrix, whose amp-blowing antics crop up every once in a while when guitarist Zandy Fitzgerald takes a solo.
