The Perk Downtown's new boozy offerings

Long-standing Tejon Street spot The Perk has acquired a liquor license, and with it has begun offering a small selection of craft beer, wine and cocktails. With astronomical events in mind, we pick up a Partial Eclipse ($7), which sees Black Magic black spiced rum floated on sparkling clementine soda, garnished with orange. The term “exactly what it says on the menu” feels reductive, but while this drink’s a fine porch sipper, it’s nice orange soda and nice rum, that’s it.

The food here is perfectly functional. We order a BLT ($6.27 with a side) with added avocado, served on wheat bread with a dab of mayo. We don’t actually get any avocado, mind, but we’re not charged for it. In the past, we’ve dug this sandwich’s thick, substantial bacon. Today, our bacon’s pedestrian, nothing special. Still, the sandwich chews light enough, and the side of house-made macaroni salad leads with black pepper and celery salt in its runny dressing.
