It wasn’t my plan to fall in love when I ordered dinner to-go from 4-year-old The Public House. But Judas Priest, the bourbon-glazed portabella burger ($12.75) is what all the little baby Swiss-and-mushroom burgers dream of becoming when they grow up. The patty’s juicy as can be, and every bite satisfies with a mighty savoriness. And for those unfamiliar with the spot’s pub chips — halved, flash-fried fingerling potatoes with garlic and Parmesan — they replace french fries just fine.

I’m sad when my dining companion finds his green chili chicken mac ($11.25) too spicy and we swap, but only momentarily. Big chunks of flavorful chili peppers stud the thick white cheddar sauce and give the dish a nice kick. The chicken breast atop retains juiciness — it’s been pounded flat and cooked fast with a seasoning that includes red chili flakes. We’ll be back, and next time, we’ll stay for a pint.
