‘The time is now, the moon is right. We will feel great things when we are out tonight, we will scream, we will shout, come with us and spin around. We’ll take off our clothes, we will run free, come spend the night and spin around with me.”

So goes Iowan metal/grindcore quartet Closet Witch’s single “Cokburner.” (I’m very glad the lyrics were made available, as I wouldn’t have guessed that’s what vocalist Mollie Piatetsky was saying.) The pagan ebullience therein probably reflects, more or less, the excitement inherent for all lovers of things fast and loud in the full lineup announcement for 71Grind IV.

The annual festival, held by the Black Sheep and Triple Nickel Tavern from June 8 through 10, received a shoutout from Decibel Magazine, which mentioned its dedicated DIY format and proclaimed, “Don’t mistake its emphasis on local venues and bands as it being some rinky-dink metal festival.” Nifty, right?

This year’s newly announced lineup, which features a sea of logos in impressively incomprehensible metal fonts, has more than a few highlights. Portland grindcore band Transient will be teaming up with Los Angeles electronic/powerviolence act Bastard Noise for a set; Portland’s Mizmor brings their elegantly doomy black metal to the proceedings; and long-running hardcore band MDC and a reunion of former members from Washington, D.C.’s United Mutation, dubbed The Mutations (featuring United Mutation’s Michael Salkind, whom locals may recognize from the Wild Hares) should appease the punk crowd. The full lineup, peppered with acts ranging from local to international, is viewable here.

Meanwhile, here are some notable shows taking place across Colorado in the weeks ahead:
