Unless you’re planning on making the trek to the upcoming 2018 Telluride Jazz Festival (headlined this year by Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe and Irma Thomas, the Soul Queen of New Orleans), the coming week represents a slight respite from summer music festivals. There is, however, still one new festival on the horizon, and The River Arkansas is once again at the center of it.

Aug. 10 to 11 in Buena Vista finds River on the River, a rafting, camping and, of course, live music festival presented by the band in conjunction with River Runners Colorado. Aside from Mike Clark’s sextet, music will be provided by Forgotten Space, Ry Warner and AGAVE. There will also be a silent disco, presumably so attendees can dance the night away without causing too much ecological unrest to the river — insert your own Christo joke here, I guess.
As for the week at hand, much of the action is going down at the Triple Nickel Tavern. Things kick off on Thursday, Aug. 2, when Oakland metal act Ovvl takes the stage on its Owl Be Back Tour, joined by art-noise-rock band Cloud Temple and local metal quintet Spirit in the Flesh. Ovvl’s sound is prog-tinged and certainly contains a good deal of late-’70s New Wave of British Heavy Metal in its instrumentally dexterous style. Their latest release, “Awaken Jupiterian,” is available in limited quantities as an orange cassette single. A full-length album is due out later this year.

The fun continues on Friday, Aug. 3, when Albuquerque’s own self-described “boozegrass” outfit Moonshine Blind comes to the Nickel with fellow New Mexico gonzo folk/country/blues act The Imperial Rooster. Joining them are perennially touring local favorites Tejon Street Corner Thieves, just returning from another jaunt across the western U.S. So, trashgrass, boozegrass and a band whose vocals are credited to “Nat King Kong” — what more could one ask for?
