On Halloween eve, Oct. 30, Third Space Coffee’s Director of Coffee Brittney Balestra co-organized a special latte art throwdown preceded by the Womxn in Coffee Awards, which recognized three vote winners: Balestra, SwitchBack Coffee Roasters’ Charlie Claus and Loyal Coffee‘s Nestaseya Baadani. The event came in response to the Indy’s recent Best Of awards, where the Barista category failed to include any female nominees. As Balestra told Barista Magazine, the point wasn’t to reprimand the Indy, but “to create an awareness of how womxn are constantly pushed to the side and questioned in terms of their skill, abilities, and education.” That intent was echoed during the evening as the Springs’ coffee community warmly celebrated their female colleagues. The (Halloween-costumed) throwdown proved as boisterous and competitive as any I’ve attended and, fittingly, other talented women took the top three spots to shut their male competitors out for the evening. Kudos!
