Re: “'Did you ever think about killing us?'

I finished this book last night and am really haunted by it. First, if the issue of brainwashing had been explored, it sounds like Colorado would not recognized that defense so I dont know if that would have helped Isaac. I am also torn by the knowledge that he did indeed, in cold blood, kill another human being, no matter what the reason. There must be punishment for that. But, he was also a vulnerable, manipulated kid by a true sociopath. Why couldn't he have been tried as an adult but kept in the juvenile system until he was 21 or something? Heck, even Michael Skakel (Kennedy cousin) was tried in juvenile court for his murdering Martha Moxely when they were 15 when he was middle aged. Of course he couldn't do 'time' in the juvy system but was appropriately tried there since it happened then. Also, remember Patti Hearst? She tried to use a brainwash defense when she was kidnapped by the SLA which the jury didn't buy. But after some years in prison she was pardoned by Bill Clinton. I guess you gotta be really wealthy to get good representation. All in all, this is one of the saddest stories I've ever read. It was also very well written. We can't ever forget the Dutchers but I found myself wondering about Isaac and whether he will ever get the mental health treatment he desparately needs.
