It just got easier for downtown residents and workers to pursue certificate and degree programs from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. That's because a deal unveiled June 25 locates a UCCS branch in a downtown building owned by Nor'wood Development Group.

The new site is 102 S. Tejon St., and rent and renovation will be funded by Nor'wood, a UCCS spokesperson says.

"We are going where our students, alumni and community partners are," Chancellor Venkat Reddy says in a release. "This will allow employees to continue their professional growth and employers to further develop their workforce, while creating new opportunities for our students, alumni and faculty to interact with our community."

Besides UCCS and Nor'wood, the city and Downtown Partnership also played a role in putting together a plan for UCCS Downtown, the release said. Located across Tejon Street from Nor'wood's Plaza of the Rockies building, the site will open Sept. 1 for a pilot phase in which non-credit classes and programs will be offered. For-credit certificates and degree programs will begin there with the 2019 fall semester.

During the upcoming academic year, UCCS Downtown will offer the College of Education's Teacher Leader Academy, the College of Business' mini-MBA program and other services.

UCCS Downtown also will include a welcome and recruitment center, a meeting location for alumni events and community advisory boards, and a box office to purchase tickets to arts and athletic events.
