Starting in late June and lasting until fall, Colorado Springs Utilities and the Colorado State Forest Service will tackle fire hazard mitigation on 93 acres of land in the Longs Ranch portion of the Pikes Peak watershed. The forested area will be thinned to reduce potential for wildland fire, notably Gambel oak. After cutting it down, workers will apply an herbicide to reduce regrowth, the state said in a news release. Only brief, temporary trail closures are expected.
