Re: “Term limit issue returns with new twists for November ballot

Ok...at the risk of being drawn and quartered...as someone who once, ignorantly, argued FOR term limits at all levels of government...and to an extent still does at the Federal Level...while getting a degree in U.S. Constitutional History and Political Science...I'm going to explain why Term Limits at the local and even state level are useless and actually detrimental to the Republic:

1. In a Representative Republic, The PEOPLE ARE the term limit...especially at the Local & State Level where the incumbency effect is much less pronounced and there is most often much less money involved in campaigning. If you want someone out of office...MAKE A CASE FOR SOMEONE ELSE AND VOTE THEM OUT and STOP WHINING if you LOOSE

2. Term Limits, especially at the local level but also very arguably at the State level as well, deprive the people of the knowledge and expertise of excellent public officials WITHOUT THE PUBLIC HAVING A SAY IN THE MATTER

3. Local and State officials are SUPPOSED to have the most power in our Republic because they are the closest to the people. Unfortunately over the last 150 or so years this has become flipped on its head by the Progressive movement and plain bad federal policies. The Federal Government, including the Presidency, was never intended to have anywhere near the power it has today and the amounts of money involved in Federal Elections almost assure that the holders of Federal offices get re-elected through crony capitalism, kickbacks and political favors. However, we have seen in recent years where groups of CITIZENS have banded together to oust incumbents in favor of "new blood"...thereby proving that even at the Federal level...The People are the term limit.

You don't like your choices then get off your butt, put yourself out there and RUN FOR PUBLIC OFFICE!

I don't have a problem with this ballot language because I don't believe in statutory term limits to begin with...especially for local officials...and I think the whole whole term limit thing that's been going on is flat out ridiculous.

There are SOO many more important things we need to be dealing with...like the continued waste of taxpayer dollars...mostly by the City.

If people weren't paying enough attention to know what they were voting for the first time around when it was CLEARLY stated then SHAME ON THEM for being ignorant and uninformed about their government. There's always going to be that small, whinny group who complain that "I didn't understand", "I didn't know" or "the language was confusing"...you know what...TOUGH...Ignorance is NOT a Valid Excuse. It is the responsibility of the citizen voting to become informed or DON'T Vote and if they don't want to take that responsibility then they have no basis for complaining.
So if I had my way term limits for local officials would not exist to begin with because that's OUR RESPONSIBILITY AS VOTERS!
